"Starbucks" Chai Tea Latté

Matt got a Starbucks gift card from a student for Christmas. Very nice when I am tired in the middle of my night shift because there is a Starbucks right in the hospital. I started drinking soy chai latte a couple weeks ago. When I am out of money on my Starbucks card, I will be avoiding the place so I needed to find a recipe so I could make this myself at home (link below to tasty kitchen). We have an espresso machine with a milk frother so I could do somewhat of the same thing Starbucks does. My results turned out amazing!! I used one part vanilla almond milk and one part chai.
My spices before brew: I included a picture because when I went shopping for these things, I did not know what the spices looked like.

  • 4-½ cups Water
  • 1 stick Cinnamon
  • 1 piece Fresh Ginger Chopped (i used 1 tablespoon)
  • 7 whole Cardamom Pods (those white oval shape things in the upper right hand side)
  • 2 whole Star Anise Pods (those are the star things in the picture above)
  • 10 whole Cloves (pictures in the upper left part of the picture above)
  • ¼ teaspoons Freshly Ground Black Pepper
  • ½ teaspoons Freshly-ground Nutmeg (I used pre-ground)
  • 1 teaspoon Orange Zest (just the peel off my navel orange from my fruit basket)
  • 10 teaspoons Green Or Black Tea Or 10 Tea Bags (I used black tea)
  • ⅔ cups Brown Sugar (I used light)
  • 1 Tablespoon Honey
  • 1 Tablespoon Vanilla

I bought most of my spices in the bulk foods section at Winco. You can find the Cardamom pods at Sunflower Market or at Whole Foods. I found the anise pods in the mexican foods section for $1.29 for a bag. Spices are MUCH cheaper buying in bulk. Tea is also cheaper at Asian Markets.

Bring the water to a boil. Add the spices and tea, remove from heat (I put mine in a glass bowl instead of leaving it in the teapot) and let steep 15-20 minutes (I did 30 minutes), depending on how strong you want it. Strain (Use a small mesh strainer) and add the brown sugar, honey, and vanilla. Stir to combine.

Mix 1 part concentrate with 1 part milk, heat and enjoy or pour over ice.
